Five SEO Lessons

Tina Fronk
October 31, 2012
First, happy Halloween to all! Now, lets get down to business.

Today, we will discuss five ways to make sure your website succeeds. A large part of your business's success is dependent upon your website, so follow these tips to help your company.

First, you must remember SEO tactics are always changing and evolving. SEO tools that worked yesterday might not work today. Here's why: Google and numerous other search engines are constantly updating and changing their algorithms to better improve search results. For example, Google's Panda and Penguin updates targeted backlinks and quality issues. Before these updates, backlink profiles, organic or not, helped increase your rankings. You must update your SEO tactics often and monitor changes in the SEO world. Doing so will allow your website to rank higher and generate more traffic.

Secondly, stick to 'white hat' SEO tactics. It may be tempting to short cut and use the newest scamming tactics, but rest assured, the search engines will eventually catch on and you will be penalized. Organic and white hat tactics are initially more work, but won't get you or your website in trouble and usually last a while. Also, you will have to spend a lot of time restoring your rankings when you get penalized. Google is constantly updating their algorithm and will catch bad tactics. SEO requires time, effort and a lot of monitoring. Good SEO tactics will ensure long-term results and won't leave you with penalties.

Three and four focus on your website and the content. Remember what you can control. You have no power over your competitors and search engines. However, you have control of your website and the value you provide. Quality and relevant content should be a top priority. No one will visit your website twice if they find no value in it. Convince your visitors why your product or service is the best. Also, make sure to invest in a solid landing page that gets a high conversion rate.

Lastly, remember what works for YOU. Sure, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest are big now, but are they right for your customer base? Don't be swayed by the newest and flashiest marketing trends; not all of them will work for you and your business. Choose a few that you can fully commit to and BE CONSISTENT. Do not get involved in social media unless you are willing to invest the time and keep it updated regularly. A poor social media campaign can have a negative effect on your business.

Simplicity. Keep it simple and follow the basics. These tips will help you get on the right foot and ensure good SEO practices. For more information, check out the full article:http://www.free-seo-news.com/newsletter549.htm#facts

Google Updates Again

Tina Fronk
October 25, 2012
Google is constantly updating their algorithm and making changes that better help the user. While admirable, these changes force websites to consistently adapt, including your website.

Here are some of the major updates that affect your website and rankings:

In regards to quality on your website, Google has made numerous changes. 'Page quality' and 'freshness' helped users find higher quality content from trusted sources and new and recent content (older content was lower in the rankings). Up-to-date, relevant content from reliable sources will definitely help you rise in the rankings.

Next, Google tackled web page ranking and indexing. These relate to location and relevancy. For example, if you search something with a location, the SERPs will show only websites that are relevant to your location search. Google has also produced fewer results for some searches in order to provide the most relevant results as fast as possible.

These updates can help you figure out how to revamp your website and maintain or increase your rankings. Use solid, 'white hat' SEO methods and you will take each update in stride.

Planning for Expansion: Editorial Calendars and Growth

 Tina Fronk
October 13, 2012

Have you thought about growing your audience? Almost every business would answer 'yes.' However, did you think about achieving this goal via an editorial calendar? It may seem odd, but an editorial calendar can help build your customer relationships and bring in new clients.

So, what is an editorial calendar? It organizes and schedules topics that are relevant to your business and lays out when to cover topics. By organizing these topics/themes, you can create a steady following and recruit guest contributors. You should choose topics that are related to your industry and be sure not to directly talk about your company. This strategy allows you to build invaluable customer relationships.

What else should you post, tweet and blog about? A great starting block is a 'tip of the day' summary article or a brief about any big news in your industry. Polls are also a good way to engage your audience. Consistency is key, so make sure to stick to a schedule that works for you and your business.

An editorial calendar plans out day-by-day, week-by-week and month-by-month updates and posts so you can stay ahead of the curve and create meaningful relationships with your audience. The calendar also ensures content is delivered in a timely manner and provides staff with a game plan for the week. If a calendar keeps your content updated, it's worth it.

Consistency leads to increased traffic, meaningful audience engagement and even acquiring new customers. If you haven't tried out an editorial calendar, it's definitely worth a shot. They help your business operate smoothly and help organize your content strategy. John Mueller On Your Rankings

Tina Fronk
October 4, 2012

Has your website been hit with penalties? Numerous websites were affected by Google's updates over the last several months and have not completely recovered. Is there any good news? Google's John Mueller explains how penalties, even after removed, can still affect your rankings and how to avoid the effects of penalties.

If your website has been penalized, look into why. If you fix the problem, Google will lift the penalty. You must take action and clean up your website. It not only makes it function better and give it better credibility, but a clean sweep can help your rankings on Google.

Mueller notes that a lifted penalty does not result in higher rankings. Mueller says that this happens either because your previous high rankings were unjustified or because other factors account for a larger portion of your ranking position.

Unjustified rankings are due to unnatural back links, so if you don't have other good links, you won't get your high ranking back. Also, high rankings are achieved through numerous factors, not just back links. Each factor influences the position of your website, so it won't necessarily return to its high ranking after a penalty is lifted.

To achieve high rankings, stick to natural back links and white-hat SEO tactics. Make sure to use quality content and keep your website updated.
