Pinterest is a relatively new social media network. However, it stands on its own merits and is uniquely different from other social sites.
Pinterest is a social sharing site where users 'pin' links on their virtual pinboards. For example, I can pin a picture of shirt I just bought off a website so everyone can see it. I can link them to the site so they too can buy the shirt. Link sharing is the foundation of Pinterest. Users and friends of users can re-pin posts and thus create more links for your site.
The pinboard can be organized into categories (such as 'tops' or 'shirts') or based around a theme the user chooses. Pinterest provides a newsfeed, per se, that shows what friends are pinning to their boards.
So, why is Pinterest important to you and your business? Pinterest provides yet another channel for social sharing and a new way to share information via the web.
Also, Pinterest builds brand awareness. Think of all the people on this site who pin products (possibly yours) to their boards. Users can share these products across multiple pinboards, which means more exposure for your brand.
Pinterest is still new, but it looks like it's off to a great start. Definitely make it part of your social media campaign if it meshes well.
