The right keywords can improve your ranking, thus making your business more visible to more potential customers. Many people go after the most popular search terms; this is a bad idea. That particular keyword has a high search volume, so your business is competing with all the other companies who use that keyword.

This is explained through the 'long tail' idea. The most popular search terms only make up a portion of search engine results. According to seomoz.com, 70 percent of these results come from the 'long tail' keywords.

What does this mean for your business? You must find the keywords that make up the 70 percent, or the long tail. Although your keywords may have less search volume, you are zoning in on customers who are more likely to visit your site. Also, the more specific you are, the greater chance you have of reaching those customers who are interested in what you offer.
